BKT EuroCup: Skuja vs. Lomažs

Latvia’s national team captain returns to Riga – this time in a “Cedevita Olimpija” jersey.

On October 14 at 19:00, “Rīgas Zeļļi” will host “Cedevita Olimpija” Ljubljana at Xiaomi Arena in the BKT EuroCup, with Latvia’s national team captain Rihards Lomažs returning to Riga in the visiting team’s colors.

Lomažs joined the Ljubljana club this summer after an impressive season with Klaipėda’s “Neptūnas”. Last season, he was one of the Lithuanian club’s key players, helping “Neptūnas” claim the LKL bronze medal. He was also among the leading scorers in the BKT EuroCup, averaging 18.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists over 16 games.

Lomažs made an immediate impact in his first EuroCup appearance for “Cedevita Olimpija”, scoring 22 points, although the Ljubljana side ultimately fell to Spanish club “San Pablo Burgos” on the road.

“Cedevita Olimpija” has a rich history that is closely connected with Latvian basketball. The current club was established in 2019 through the merger of Ljubljana’s “Olimpija” and Zagreb’s “Cedevita”, while the basketball tradition of the Ljubljana club dates back to 1946.

Several prominent Latvian players have also worn the “Olimpija” jersey. Roberts Štelmahers spent two seasons in Ljubljana and won the Slovenian championship in 2004. Dāvis Bertāns, Kaspars Cipruss and Ronalds Zaķis also represented the club.

But this time, it is not a former “Olimpija” player returning to Riga.

It is Latvia’s national team captain, now writing a new chapter in the history of the Ljubljana club.

And he will face another Latvian national team player.
