BKT EuroCup: Riga Zelli vs Baglietto Derthona Tortona

Small town versus capital city. History begins in Riga.

On September 30, Riga Zelli will play the first match in the club’s history in the EuroCup, hosting Italy’s Baglietto Derthona Tortona on home court.

Although Tortona has a population of just under 27,000, its basketball club has become one of Italy’s biggest success stories in recent years. From the lower leagues to participation in one of Europe’s most prestigious club tournaments – Derthona has achieved its rise in under a decade.

The name Derthona is no stranger to Latvian basketball fans. For the past three seasons, Latvian national team forward Artūrs Strautiņš played for this very club, becoming one of the team’s leaders.

Riga Zelli is also writing its own history. In the three years since the club’s founding, it has won medals in every domestic tournament and is now taking the next step – its EuroCup debut, becoming the first Latvian club since 2015 to play in Europe’s second-strongest club tournament. And it is precisely against this ambitious Italian team that a new chapter in the club’s history will open.
