Both teams are preparing for the European Championship, which will start for the Latvian national team on August 27 at Xiaomi Arena.

Since the summer of 2021, the Latvian national team has achieved one of the best records in the world in official matches – 29 wins in 34 games – and is ranked 9th in the FIBA standings. In the European Championship qualification tournament, Latvia was one of the three teams that won all six games. EuroBasket 2025 at home is eagerly anticipated with high expectations and determination.

Since winning the European Championship title in 2017 and securing 4th place at the Tokyo Olympics, the Slovenian team has slightly dropped from the top spots but is still one of the main favorites for major tournaments. With superstar Luka Dončić on their side, the Slovenian offense is tough to stop, promising a highly entertaining and high-scoring game.

The men’s basketball teams of Latvia and Slovenia have played eight official tournament matches, with each team winning four times. Three games have been particularly significant: In 2001, the Latvian team triumphed in a match to qualify for the European Championship knockout stage (99:93); in 2015, Latvia won in the EuroBasket Round of 16 (73:66); and in 2017, Slovenia prevailed in a dramatic EuroBasket quarterfinal match (103:97), eventually becoming the champions.
